Designed automation tools for document generation and assisted in finding solutions to critical problems they were having within their code base

I wrote some Python scripts to automate the post-processing for some of their FEA analysis for the hood slam test case. I was essentially working with the API for their FEA post-processing software but it wasn't anything too complex for someone with a CS background. I also got to witness some in-person tests and run some FEA simulations so that was also pretty cool.

A lot of the CS interns and a lot of the mechanical/electrical engineers were almost fully remote, so it felt a little isolated sometimes. My position was very flexible which was nice because I could choose to stay home or go into the office depending on how I felt each day.

Created 3d models for traffic signs for feature testing in a simulated environment, wrote test cases for a safety feature that would be deployed on future cars

Did most work remote then went in person to lab to test every week or so.

Built tracker tools, revised order recommendations, worked on buyer study surveys

Biggest project was redesigning tooling to decrease average cycle time and then ordering the parts needed for the new design

Designing a crank train components for oil film, weight, and balance optimization

Cable failure tests and computer modeling of parts. 

I edited some in-process factory problem-solving flow diagrams. I also used a lot of excel to document errors happening in the production line and for record-keeping.

I did Continuous Improvement work through optimization of one of our manufacturing processes and by decreasing weld expulsion throughout the plant. This consisted of a lot of troubleshooting and 6 sigma processes. I also learned how to use an Ultrasonic Spot-Checking device to check weld nugget sizes and taught other coworkers how to use it.

I worked on tracking asbestos abatements that had been completed over the past 20 years, completed rainwater collections, creating an up to date environment map for the site, tracked different species on site, oversaw a PCB encapsulation project, completed a new regulation deadline calendar for the group, and got to sit in on all of the meetings my group members were involved with to learn more about regulations, projects, etc.

I was moved into my group at the last minute because of COVID so they didnt have any projects set aside for me so all I did was clerical work and some excel data manipulation.... a far cry from the job description that I accepted

GM cancelled all of the in person events that they have historically had (and were allegedly quite nice).  I am not sure what it will be like post-covid since GM seems to be cutting their internship budget as time goes on
