My experience

Overview

I loved everything about it. This company is highly involved in their communities, and are really focused on giving the interns a great experience. We connect with VP's and higher ups every other month for a video call to be able to learn from their experiences. We have intern "lunch-ins" with other interns in different locations and are generally just cared for a LOT. We tours other facilities as well. Hubbell is focused on your learning and your growth and they WILL challenge you. They are not afraid to throw you in. I felt I actually had a huge part in meetings and not just falling asleep. I had a voice and I had engineers coming and talking to me all the time. I was constantly on the phone with them, even for hours at a time, discussing design decisions and technical constraints. There was constant communication across the company and across its different locations as well. The only thing though, as a designer, people failed to really ASK for what they wanted. So I was constantly going in circles and taking time to sketch and they say "oh thats not what I want" and Im like well TELL ME! Other than that, awesome awesome experience. Also the people there is really what made my experience. The culture is GREAT!

After graduation, I am definitely considering working there full time. I was treated so well and I learned so much in only 3 months, and definitely did not think I would enjoy designing light fixtures when my main interest was the toy industry. But with my engineering background (BSME) I think I found a good mix between that passion and my ID masters degree.

Would recommend it to people who...

Really love the blend of aesthetic and technical design (merging engineering and ID together). There are a lot of components involved in designing these lighting structures and you have to know or at least ask and be curious with how it works to be able to design them well.

Would NOT recommend it to people who...

Are looking for UX/UI internship, interested in designing less technical products, cant handle multiple projects at a time (I was doing probably 4 or 5 all at the same time with little ones on the side here and there)

Interview advice

Advice on how to prepare

Really, just be YOURSELF. My interview was a little different, I had one phone call and I got the job the next week (sort of last minute, got it in March). My interviewer didn't ask me much about my portfolio, she just wanted to get to know me and how I work. She even asked me "what is something you do NOT like to do" and I answered honestly that "I dont want to sit at a desk all day" and even though she said "well thats what you will be doing all day" but that helped her to understand how I worked and was constantly giving me more and more projects during my internship to keep me busy. Honestly, that company is all about culture and you could tell across all the interns why and how they picked them. Everyone is very down to earth and sweet and loves to have fun and joke around with eachother. Everyone has a smile on their face and even tells me to "leave" when Im staying too late after work. Work life balance is key there and they really emphasize it.
