My experience

Overview

I built and slightly redesigned part of a web application for their clients. Their original application is based on Flash, which will no longer be supported after 2020. I, with the help of my mentors, built the entire part of this application from scratch. One of the the things I did for the back end was building a data structure that designed around the desired functionality of a visual component. Additionally, I figured out a way to minimize the number of database quires using this data structure. For the front end, I worked with some of the UI/UX internal consultants to make some minor changes to the layout that would make it easier to understand. As previously mentioned, this was part of the new HTML5 application, but I think the coolest thing is that this was the last necessary part of the application that needed to be implemented. This section of application was very complicated, so we knew that I probably would not be able to finish it in its entirety, but I did complete all the goals we set for the summer, as well as a few stretch goals.

Everyone at this company is super helpful and supportive. People will drop what they're doing (if they can) to help you when you're stuck. This company truly has a teaching culture, in that they truly encourage questions and make sure that you get answers (either from themselves, or they'll direct you to someone else that probably knows). Some internships are competitive in nature (like making you feel like you have to compete with other interns), but this internship is designed to help you succeed and thrive.

Would recommend it to people who...

Are not afraid to ask questions; enjoy working closely with a team

Would NOT recommend it to people who...

prefer to sit alone at a desk and code all day

Impact of work

How much knowledge or experience was needed going in (pre-requisites)?

Time spent working

How did working remote affect your experience?

Ab Initio is very much an in person company. Working remotely was not common until COVID hit. Likely, things will turn more in person after COVID
