My experience

Overview

I refactored an entire internal web app from class components to functional components and hooks in React. Within this, I optimized certain user flows, made the app more responsive, and had a say in certain design decisions to build a great UX. Also enhanced PHP backend app to more effectively communicate with core Tesla services.

Tesla, despite an awesome financial year, still pays interns very low compared to other tech companies. Regardless, it was a tremendous experience and I have learned more in my 6 months at Tesla than I have all 4 years I have been programming.

I would recommend an internship at Tesla for people who are looking for a more impactful and faster-paced internship experience compared to other, more traditional tech companies.

Impact of work

Time spent working

How did working remote affect your experience?

With the internship being remote, it was a more difficult onboarding process than normal. That being said, the IT and HR teams were very responsive to my requests and willing to help out when needed. Also, my team was very understanding and helpful when it came to getting caught up with the workflow, development practices, and Scrum schedule. Despite being remote, Tesla held weekly intern events as well as intern "coffee chats" to meet new people.

Advice on how to prepare

Getting the interview is the hardest part of an internship at Tesla. Without prior experience, it can be hard to stand out but there are 2 main things that will greatly assist you in getting the interview. Firstly, it is important to have projects on your resume that you are passionate about. This helps you stand out compared to candidates with real experience and it shows your passion for technology. Secondly, it is a great idea to cold email or message recruiters. If you can get some more information about a specific role you can make a concise argument for your candidacy to get your foot in the door.
