My experience

Overview

Processed data. Clients would send their data on financial transactions or their list of stores or some other transaction-related dataset, and the data engineering team would extract it, convert file formats, ingress it to our server, and then do some SQL transformations and validations to set it up with our data model.

Aside from the actual work, this was a fantastic environment. Incredibly kind, helpful, and social coworkers made the adjustment to a new city much easier. People were very very willing to mentor, assist, and give advice as I figured things out.

Pros

Largely straightforward work, similar process for many clients, not much direct client interaction

Cons

None for me

Impact of work

Time spent working

How did working remote affect your experience?

Very flexible; most people were in-office two days a week and worked from home the rest. I worked in-office four days a week just due to my own preferences, while another intern worked completely remote for a few weeks.

Interview advice

Interview Rounds

Interview type

Interview questions

A few general "how would you access a certain subsection of this data" SQL questions, like querying the max or min of a group, validating the correct number of distinct states, etc. In another round, was asked how you would design the data model for a post office, in terms of the most relevant tables and columns.

Advice on how to prepare

I didn't know SQL at the time of interviewing, but I'm sure that would help. It's essential to have an interest in or knowledge of data modelling systems.
