My experience

Overview

The Secured Card workflow system orchestrates "workflows" that consist of microservice calls to perform account-related functions (e.g. "send email with updated terms and conditions"). My team built a web app which provided functionality to view and manipulate workflows and a dashboard to view workflow metrics.

I didn't go back because this internship experience really solidified that I want to work on system software and, well, Capital One doesn't do that. For anyone who doesn't have that specific interest, I'd highly recommend Capital One.

Pros

Very friendly culture, good work life balance

Impact of work

Time spent working

Interview advice

Interview questions

One question that stood out during the behavioral interview was "describe a time when you had to explain a complex concept to an unfamiliar audience". The case interview focused around big-picture aspects of designing a system although I don't remember specifics. The technical interview consisted of a simple string manipulation problem and a problem that basically amounted to making change using different coin denominations, although the interviewer told me not to worry about doing the optimal dynamic programming solution and that a greedy algorithm was fine.

Advice on how to prepare

Be prepared for intermediate difficulty technical/coding questions. Also be equipped to discuss very high level aspects of designing an application or system for the case interview.
