My experience

Overview

I had multiple projects within a section of the chemical plant. They were primarily optimization projects. I did two plant tests, a software tool, and a capital investment tool. I was able to pick up some smaller projects when I had lulls in my big projects. A lot of data analytics and critical thinking was needed.

My entire work group was very supportive and amazing to work with. It was disappointing to see many people frustrated with the company because of layoffs as it seemed like a big disconnect between the HR and executives and the rest of the employees. Exxon was a great place to work and they were very flexible and accommodating placing a high priority on work life balance. I was able to take off a few days and make up my hours and work from home if needed. Everyone I worked with was incredibly talented and smart. All of the other interns were very extroverted, fun, smart people as well. The company culture is changing a lot in some ways for the better (more flexible, better work life balance, compensation).

Pros

incredibly smart people, very flexible and accommodating, amazing compensation, challenging work, great learning environment, plenty of growth opportunities, seen as an investment

Cons

disconnect between staff and high up executive positions, high attrition, location

Impact of work

Time spent working
