Made an API that accessed a few databased  and integrated the API into an existing internal tool/ web app.  

Worked with my explore pod on cinematics for Halo's Narrative team. Out project dealt with internal tools. Not gonna say much else, just to be sure I don't break my NDA lol.

Created a "calculator" to determine the actual gross margin on bulk purchases of Surfaces, helped team negotiate bulk purchase contract pricing

Building a metrics monitoring system for a new set of servers in Azure data centers. Incorporating some new search terms for metrics

C2Rust is an open source tool that mechanically translates a C program to equivalent Rust and provides rudimentary capabilities to refactor it. My first task was to port C2Rust to run on Windows. Next, I implemented an analysis to determine if raw (unsafe) pointers in the generated Rust could be converted to (safe) references.

I created a rough draft of story flows that would be used to create virtual renditions of products and their use. 

It was harder to stay focused and engaged, but my team did a really good job of keeping me involved and sending me tangible items that made me feel more engaged.

Prototyped the next version of Widgets for Windows 11. My project was tented for half the internship because it was part of Windows 11 launch and the actual project will be confidential until next year. 

Remote made it harder to connect with my team and network with peers, but Microsoft provided a lot of support in trying to connect interns to other interns in their organization and had several mentor/mentee programs. 

Worked as both PM and SWE. End to end project development from defining project bounds to implementation. Built a full-stack project that will be pushed into production. 

It was sad on my end- but everyone was so welcoming and tried to make it as engaging and exciting of an experience as possible. 

I worked on helping to add a new usage vertical to a high performance computing product. Essentially it originally was mainly used with VMs but I helped to make it usable from docker containers and in kubernetes clusters. 

It was definitely a lot harder to interact with my colleagues. I felt as if I didn't meet anyone by the end. 

Created a CDM to connect two pipelines to one DB. Also, I took on PM responsibilities for about 3 weeks. 

Reduced tendencies of interpersonal relationships. Also, being remote meant conflicting time zones while scheduling meetings. 

I helped my team out with creating a framework for semester planning. I created workflows and calendars to help my team stay on track with planning for future semesters

I was really looking forward to meeting and socializing with other interns but I didn’t really get to due to the internship being virtual 

Improved testing in an Xbox title that is unreleased. We build an end-to-end testing process that would improve at least one element of testing. 

It was not as bad as I had feared. MSFT has a very inclusive culture. 

for the SWE portion - my pod worked on implementing the ability to change the group chat avatar in Microsoft Teams. A lot of the work I did was heavily supplemented by a mentor, imo. For the PM portion, we were given a problem statement and designed a feature with full specifications. 

Worked on a project that enhances the user experience for a Windows feature.  I was responsible for the mining and interpretation of usage data through telemetry work

Worked on Microsoft Viva Topics. Built tool to compare documents returned by Viva Topics versus the Substrate Search. Used tool to figure out how to improve Viva Topics

A lot of online meetings with team members and pod. Easier to manage work schedule - for example lunch breaks were faster. Easier to connect with people online. Harder to stay engaged with people for a longer time. Time zone can also be an issue.

My main project was to plan, design, and build a self-service billing portal to help the billing and monetization team to manage the billing process. 

Yeah it would have been much better if it was in-person but Microsoft did their best to ensure that interns have a great experience. 

Developed service with C# and .NET framework to refresh marketing segments stored in Azure Data Lake to allow businesses to target their newest customers in marketing campaigns 


Did a proof of concept for our moving our services to the Azure cloud using Kubernetes to manage them 

I used metrics monitoring and instrumented code to monitor how an API was performing and created a dashboard to show results like this week's latency, # of bad requests, etc

It was chill, they were very understanding that my work hours could differ since I stayed on the east coast. I think they will continue to be remote through the COVID situation, for a loooong while until it gets better. 

I created a custom help bot for an internal Microsoft servicel. Integrated with backend APIs, databases, and a suite of Azure cognitive resources in order to process and extra key information from user messages in order to provide relevant answers. 

I thought they did a fantastic job with a remote internship but I do think they will go back to in person when they can

It all started when I told my recruiter I was interested in computer vision and robotics. My recruiter promised I would be matched with relevant work and I made the mistake of giving her the benefit of the doubt. The recruiters at Microsoft have no desire to actually help you and are only interested in trapping desperate college kids in offers they cannot negotiate. I worked on an ML "research" project for a team that deals with big data within the infamous "Universal Store" group. The team was comprised entirely of backend engineers with no data scientists and nobody with any ML experience. My project was an experiment, and was treated as irrelevant to the team's goals and impact. Most of the people on my team showed up to work with the intention of spending 8 (or less) hours there, and leaving by 5. The org overall was described to me as a "mixed bag" and I could not disagree more. The term "mixed bag" implies some good and some bad, but not a single other intern I worked with was overtly enthusiastic about their job, or seriously interested and passionate about the work that they were doing.

As a naive undergrad, I was expecting a prestigious company where people go to work on high impact projects with large scope. Instead I was put in a glorified summer camp where children play all day and work on projects with (usually) no impact and no visibility.
